Department of 3D Studies

Beginning in 1967, Marcel Breuer and his partner Herbert Beckhard began to design a Brutalist campus center and subterranean garage for the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The ten-storey slab building overlooks the campus pond to the south and is situated in the center of an elevated terrace with canted sides created by stairs. To maximize space the architects placed a cafeteria, bookstore, conference and meeting rooms below ground.
